CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Google issued an urgent warning Friday imploring all chrome users to update their browsers now.
The tech giant issued a security update and confirmed attackers are exploiting a severe vulnerability.
Typically, when technology updates are available, they contain bug fixes, but this problem is so pressing that the update resolves just one thing. FOX19 NOW Tech Expert Dave Hatter said it should indicate the urgency.
“So, deep down inside your web browser, there are all these different software components that work together to do different things,” he said. “This particular vulnerability with Chrome and it also affects Microsoft Edge and other browsers as well, by the way, because they all use something called the Chromium engine that Chrome is built on.”
Hatter said users should install the update as soon as it is available from a software vendor by selecting “menu - help - about” or a similar sequence. It does vary from browser to browser, but it will tell you if there is an update available.

One key tip, users have to reboot their browser once the update is installed for it to take effect, otherwise, the browser will continue to be vulnerable.
Google has not announced who has been exploiting this vulnerability, but Hatter said the world has seen attacks like this in the past.
“The kind of attacks we see here like this Chrome thing or some of these bigger scale attacks like the JVM, meat plant or the Colonial Pipeline. Some of that is typically driven by you know, what we nerds call nation state or AAPT advanced persistent threat type actors, which really, generally speaking, are China and Russia, Iran and North Korea,” he said.
Hatter said the attacks from nation state are more vicious because they are government-sponsored and potentially cost millions of dollars in fallout.
He also said if you have not received the update yet, Firefox and Safari do not use the Chromium engine, so they are considered to be more privacy friendly.
