Destiny 2 update: How to download PS5, Xbox Series X next-gen upgrade - Polygon

Destiny 2’s free “next-gen” upgrade is now available, allowing owners of the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to play the game in higher fidelity on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X. But because of the PS5’s clunky interface, it’s a lot more complicated and annoying to download the upgrade on Sony’s new console.

Because Destiny 2 is part of Microsoft’s Smart Delivery program, everything just works — if you’re on an Xbox Series X or Series S, your console will automatically download the upgrade. (If you already have the Xbox One version installed and have been playing it via backward compatibility, your console will download the upgrade as a patch, although it’ll effectively be re-downloading the entire game in a 67 GB file.)

On the Sony side, things aren’t as simple.

If you already have the PlayStation 4 version of Destiny 2 installed, and the icon is sitting on your PS5 dashboard, you may not be able to simply press Options to bring up the context menu and find the PS5 version of the game under Game Version. Instead, find the Destiny 2 tile in the Game Library, and then press Options and select “View Game.” That will take you to the PlayStation Store page for the PS4 version of Destiny 2. From there, click the three dots menu, which should bring up a menu that includes PS5 | Full | Destiny 2 or PS4 and PS5 | Full | Destiny 2. That’ll send you to the PlayStation Store page for the upgrade, where you’ll see a big download button.

Thankfully, the upgrade showed up for me at the top of the search results.

However, that might not work for you, either! I had to manually search for Destiny 2 in the PlayStation Store on my PS5. The first search result was for a product page called Destiny 2 PS4™ & PS5™ — that’s the upgrade. Once I clicked into that listing, I was able to initiate the download.

On all new consoles, the upgrade will allow people to play Destiny 2 at 60 frames per second, which, until now, has only been possible in the Windows PC and Stadia versions of the game. Destiny 2 will run in native 4K on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, while the less powerful Xbox Series S will continue to run the game at 1080p. In addition, PvP action in the Crucible will be playable at 120 fps. Other improvements include shorter load times, a field of view slider (also previously exclusive to the PC version), and cross-generation play.
