Eufy’s “No clouds” cameras upload facial thumbnails to AWS - Ars Technica

Young girl looks into Eufy doorbell lock camera
Enlarge / Anker's cameras store their footage on a local base. Thumbnail images of faces, however, were uploaded to cloud servers.
Eufy

Eufy, a smart home brand of tech accessory firm Anker, had become popular among some privacy-minded security camera buyers. Its doorbell camera and other devices proudly proclaimed having "No Clouds or Costs," and that "no one has access to your data but you."

That's why security consultant and researcher Paul Moore's string of tweets and videos, demonstrating that Eufy cameras were uploading name-tagged thumbnail images to cloud servers to alert owners' phones, likely unencrypted, stung smart home and security enthusiasts so hard this week.

Moore, based in the UK, started asking Eufy rhetorical questions about its practices on Twitter starting November 21. "Why is my 'local storage" #doorbellDual storing every face, without encryption, to your servers? Why can I stream my camera without #authentication?!" Moore also posted lines from "source code & API responses" that suggested a very weak AES key was being used to encrypt video footage.

On November 23, Moore uploaded a video that demonstrated his findings. With his Eufy Homebase unplugged, Moore walked in front of his camera. From an incognito web browser, Moore could pull up a thumbnail image of himself, an image of the feed shortly before he was visible, and—perhaps more concerning—ID numbers indicating his recognized face and his status as the camera owner.

Security researcher Paul Moore's video detailing Eufy's quiet uploads of thumbnails and names (from facial recognition) to a cloud server.

One day later, security firm SEC Consult summarized two years of analyzing a EufyCam 2, noting a similar transfer of thumbnails through an Amazon Web Services cloud. The company also saw the weak keys, suggesting "hard-coded encryption/decryption keys which are identical for all sold Homebase devices," though it was unclear for what the keys were being used.

SEC Consult noted that Eufy seemed to have hardened its security since May 2021, when users were suddenly given nearly full access to other people's accounts. "But sadly, thumbnails of all recorded images still seem to be transferred into AWS, so the device does not fit our requirements for privacy." SEC said it moved up its publication of its findings based on Moore's tweets, and "with [Black Friday] shopping mania just around the corner."

Moore later posted a response from Eufy to his findings, in which a Eufy support representative states that thumbnails are restricted by account logins, and the URL "will expire within 24 hours" unless the user shares it. The Eufy rep also notes that Eufy "noticed it before" and plans to make its Homebase 3 store thumbnails locally, too.

Moore also claimed in a later tweet, tagged to another user's screenshot, that you could remotely start and monitor Eufy camera streams through VLC without authentication or encryption. Moore stated that he could not release a proof of concept for the vulnerability. He also tweeted that Eufy denied his pre-action legal claim against the company, "refusing compensation," but also, Moore claimed, offered him a job.

Finally, on Monday, Moore tweeted he had "a lengthy discussion with [Eufy's] legal department" and would subsequently "give them time to investigate and take appropriate action" and declined to comment further. We've emailed Moore for comment, but had not heard back as of this post (as suggested in his tweet).

Eufy, meanwhile, responded to Ars and other outlets with a statement. Eufy affirms that its video footage and "facial recognition technology" are "all processed and stored locally on the users' device." For mobile push notifications, however, thumbnail images are "briefly and securely stored on an AWS-based cloud server." They are server-side encrypted, behind usernames and passwords, automatically delete, and comply with Apple and Google's messaging standards, as well as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) standards.

Eufy admits that when users choose between text-based or thumbnail-based notifications from their system during setup, "it was not made clear that choosing thumbnail-based notifications would require preview images to be briefly hosted in the cloud."

Eufy pledged to update its setup language and "be more clear about the use of cloud for push notifications in our consumer-facing marketing materials." Other claims made by Moore and SEC Consult were not addressed.

The second 'Super Mario Bros.' trailer reveals Donkey Kong and Rainbow Road - Engadget

Nintendo has released a new trailer for its upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie. After the short teaser the gaming giant offered at the start of last month, the new clip offers a better insight into what fans can expect from the film. Not only do we hear more of Chris Pratt as Mario, but we also see Anya Taylor-Joy and Seth Rogan make appearances as Princess Peach and Donkey Kong. Oh, and the best part is that the film will include a nod to the Mario Kart series with a visit to Rainbow Road.

According to Mario and Zelda series creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo redesigned Donkey Kong's model for the first time since the loveable ape made the jump to 3D in 1994's Donkey Kong Country. "Some of you may have noticed, but for this movie, we seized the opportunity to give a comical personality and design reminiscent of the original character," Miyamoto said.

With the exception of Chris Pratt's voice acting, everything else about the movie seems delightful. The animation is colorful and fluid, and it's great to see so many nods to other Mario games. It's also fun to see Mario cast as a bumbling newbie. Whether Super Mario Bros. will be worth the cost of admission we'll have to wait until April 7th, 2023 to find out.

Benchmark reveals Galaxy M54 SoC and memory specs, Android 13 - SamMobile - Samsung news

The upcoming Galaxy M54 5G has shown up on Geekbench earlier today, and the benchmark entry clarifies an earlier rumor concerning Samsung’s choice of chipset for the mid-range device. Namely, the Galaxy M54 5G won’t be powered by an SoC from Qualcomm but a new Exynos solution.

The online benchmark reveals that the Galaxy M54 5G (SM-M546B) should have the same chipset that may end up powering the Galaxy A54, i.e., the upcoming Exynos 1380 SoC. A previous (wild) rumor suggested that the Galaxy M54 5G may be powered by the flagship-grade Snapdragon 888 SoC, but that seems very unlikely now.

In addition to the Exynos 1380 SoC, Geekbench reveals 8GB of RAM and Android 13, so in other words, the phone should run One UI 5.0. As for performance, the Galaxy M54 5G scored 750 points in the single-core tests and 2,696 points in the multi-core benchmarks. Take these numbers with a pinch of salt, as synthetic benchmark results for unreleased devices are subject to change.

The Galaxy M54 5G may still be many months away from hitting the market. Its predecessor, the Galaxy M53 5G, was released in April 2022. If the sequel follows a yearly release schedule, that should place the Galaxy M54 5G roughly five months away from us. Once again, this means there’s plenty of time for those benchmark scores to change by the time the phone hits the shelves.

For the time being, Samsung is busy preparing the Galaxy S23 flagships for release, presumably in February. And unlike the Galaxy M54 5G, Samsung’s next flagship may be powered exclusively by Qualcomm.

Patent detects in-game “collusion” by tracking “external connections” - Ars Technica

Call it a hunch, but something tells me these two players are working together...
Enlarge / Call it a hunch, but something tells me these two players are working together...

Do you ever feel like your opponents in a free-for-all online game are trying to get you, specifically? It might not just be paranoia; it might be collusion among your opponents. And in a newly published patent application, Electronic Arts details some potential tools and data points—both inside and outside the game—that it could use to detect and root out this unfair practice.

EA's simply titled "Detecting Collusion in Online Games" patent, published earlier this month, defines collusion as when two or more players/groups that are "intended to be opponents" instead "contribute to a common cause" to "gain an unfair advantage" over others. In battle royale shooter, for instance, a small group of players communicating outside the game could stay together and gain a decided firepower advantage against their single opponents.

Many of the patent's potential methods for discovering this kind of collusion use simple and obvious in-game data. If two or more ostensibly opposed players or teams show abnormal amounts of "time spent in proximity... without engagement," for instance, there's a good chance they're working together. Even if those players show some cursory opposition at points, metrics like damage per second can be compared with the average to see if this is just opposition "for appearance sake."

Dropping items that another team or player consistently picks up is another potential sign of collusion, as is the same player or players showing up on opposing teams consistently in match after match. Colluding players may also tend to finish in similar ranked positions during their matches, especially "once the unfair advantage provided by colluding is nullified" as some of the colluding players are eliminated.

Big Brother is watching (for collusion)

Beyond easy-to-detect in-game data, though, EA's patent details other signs of collusion that can be gleaned from things like "social relationships and communications" and "third-party system connections and interactions" outside the game. That kind of data ranges from simple relationships like a "friends list" provided by the gaming platform to completely external relationships like "social media connection data."

The patent mentions "a cross team shared community metric" that counts "the number of group or community memberships... where players from both teams are members." Things like "the number of posts by a player in a particular community" shared with another player could also signify potential collusion.

Just some of the internal and external factors that EAs patented method could use to detect collusion among players.
Enlarge / Just some of the internal and external factors that EAs patented method could use to detect collusion among players.

Even "the content of extra-game communication" could be fed into the algorithm, according to the patent, such as "messages to a forum which players from both teams are participating." A "machine learning algorithm" could be used to glean any collusion-related context from this kind of out-of-game communication, or a simple keyword search could be used, according to the patent.

To be clear, the patent is upfront in saying that any player data used in any of these detection algorithms "would be in compliance with privacy policies that respect players' privacy, and in accordance with player privacy settings or preferences." That said, there's something a little Big Brother-y about the prospect of a publisher like EA scanning your Twitter posts and Reddit community memberships to see if you're trying to coordinate cheating in their online game.

Then again, in a world where players will go to extreme lengths to hide their cheating using external devices, maybe this kind of external social graph analysis is needed to root out some of the worst colluders (or at least some of the least-careful ones). In any case, having a patented design doesn't mean EA is (or ever will) use this kind of system in the wild. For now, it's just an interesting look at how one company is thinking about potential ways to detect the human side of online cheating as well as the technical side.

M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro: What’s changed? - 9to5Mac

The new iPad Pro with M2 chip takes performance another step forward, but what all has changed from the previous-gen iPad Pro? Follow along for an in-depth look at what’s the same and what’s new when comparing the M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro to help you decide what’s the best choice.

In 2021, the 11 and 12.9″ iPad Pro arrived with the powerful M1 chip, Thunderbolt connectivity, 5G for cellular models, new camera features like Center Stage, and more.

Now the 2022 M2 iPad Pro lineup brings a number of tweaks and changes, but many of them are quite minor which could push customers toward the M1 iPad Pro or even iPad Air.

Below we’ll break down all the fine details of the M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro. We’ve also got a full comparison of the new entry-level iPad and more:

Table of contents

M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro

Performance

M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro chip specs

The main difference between the new and old iPad Pro is the upgrade from an M1 to M2 chip.

That delivers up to an 18% faster CPU, 35% faster GPU (10-core vs 8-core), and a 2x boost in memory bandwidth from 50GB/s to 100GB/s.

Note: 128, 256 and 512GB models have 8GB RAM, 1TB and 2TB models have 16GB RAM.

Outside of the slight boost in CPU and GPU performance, all the other specs like storage, RAM, Thunderbolt connectivity, and 5G remain the same between the new and old iPad Pro models.

Display

M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro Display

Just like the M1 12.9″ iPad Pro, the M2 12.9″ iPad Pro is the only one that features the Liquid Retina XDR display with miniLED backlighting.

Shared display features across all pro models include up to 120Hz ProMotion, P3 wide color, full laminated displays, anti-reflective coating, and True Tone.

There appears to be just one difference between the new M2 11 and 12.9″ iPad Pro display and the M1 versions – the new Apple Pencil Hover feature.

Battery life

The 2022 iPad Pro models with M2 chip feature the same battery life as their predecessors:

  • 10 hours of web or video use on WiFi
  • 9 hours of web use with cellular

Storage and price

Storage remains the same between the old and new iPad Pro models. And pricing – original MSRP pricing – is also unchanged. However, keep an eye out for M1 iPad Pro discounts with the new models now available.

M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro cameras
2021 iPad Pro rear-facing cameras

With the iPad Pro rear camera system, you’ve got a 12MP wide lens, 10MP ultra wide lens, LiDAR Scanner, and the True Tone flash.

On the back, you get a 12MP ultra wide lens with Center Stage support.

The only changes between the M2 and M1 iPad Pro, for now, is Smart HDR 4 vs Smart HDR 3 photos and the ability to shoot ProRes video at up to 4K at 30 fps (1080p at 30 fps for 128GB models).

The iPad Pro front camera also features support for Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting, and Animoji/Memoji.

Strangely, while the iPad 10 got a handy Landscape ultra wide front camera, the iPad Pro retains the front camera on the top (short side) bezel.

Dimensions, weight, colors

Size and weight are identical between the M2 iPad Pro and M1 iPad Pro according to Apple:

  • M2 and M1 11-inch iPad Pro: 1.03 pounds, 9.74 inches (247.6 mm) high, 7.02 inches (178.5 mm) wide, 0.23 inches (5.9 mm) thick
  • M2 and M1 12.9-inch iPad Pro: 1.5 pounds, 11.04 inches (280.6 mm) high, 8.46 inches (214.9 mm) wide, 0.25 inches (6.4 mm) thick

Color choices remain the same with silver and space gray.

Other small differences

Two more little differences you’ll see with the M2 iPad Pro:

  • Braided USB-C cable in the box instead of a plastic cable
  • “iPad Pro” wordmark on the back instead of “iPad” on previous iPad Pro models
  • M2 iPad Pro space gray may be slightly lighter than the M1 iPad Pro space gray finish with the antenna line for cellular models being more muted
Apple’s space gray finishes as shown on its website. M2 on left, M1 on right

M2 iPad Pro vs M1 iPad Pro conclusion

Why buy M2 iPad Pro?

When considering all the similarities between the M2 iPad Pro and M1, you’ll probably only want to pick up the new model if you’re a pro with workflows that will benefit from the M2 chip/ProRes support or you’re just okay with spending the money on the latest and greatest from Apple.

The M2 iPad Pro is available at Apple, Amazon, Best BuyBH Photo, and more with stock looking good across the board.

Why buy M1 iPad Pro?

When you can get the vast majority of the M2 iPad Pro feature set with the M1 iPad Pro and the processor difference not being an issue for most users, picking one up at a discount will probably be a popular move.

Also, don’t forget the iPad Air offers a compelling package at an even cheaper price than the last-gen iPad Pro. That is if you’re okay with the 11-inch size.

Brazilian regulator seizes iPhones from retail stores as Apple fails to comply with charger requirement - 9to5Mac

The Brazilian Ministry of Justice ordered in September the suspension of iPhone sales in the country after concluding that Apple harms consumers by not offering the power adapter included with the device. Even after million-dollar fines, Apple still fails to comply with the requirement – which has now led to the Federal District-based consumer protection regulator seizing iPhones from retail stores.

As first reported by Tecnoblog, Procon-DF has seized “hundreds of iPhones in different retail stores in Brasilia,” the capital of Brazil. In an action named “Operation Discharge,” the regulator aims to force Apple to comply with local law that requires smartphones to be shipped with the charger included in the box.

According to the report, the iPhones were seized at carrier stores and authorized Apple resellers. The regulator has ordered the banning of any iPhone model that lacks the charger included in the box. Although Apple stopped shipping the accessory for free with iPhone 12, the company also updated iPhone 11 with a new, more compact box without the charger.

After the iPhones were seized, Apple Brazil requested the government to allow sales of the smartphone in the country until the final decision of the dispute. The company told Tecnoblog that it continues to sell iPhones in Brazil despite the operation.

As noted by MacMagazine, Judge Diego CĂąmara Alves, who allowed the company to continue selling iPhones in Brazil until a final ruling, believes that the company is not violating any consumer rights. The judge also claims that the Brazilian regulator is “abusing its power” with such a decision. Apple says it is confident it will win the legal dispute and that customers “are aware of the various options for charging and connecting their devices.”

Apple isn’t that confident

Despite what the company says about being confident that it will win the dispute, a recent company decision shows otherwise. With the recently released new generation Apple TV, which comes with an updated version of the Siri Remote with USB-C instead of Lightning, the company has stopped shipping the product with a charging cable included in the box.

Interestingly, in Brazil, the new Apple TV 4K still comes with a USB-C cable included in the box. While the company doesn’t say the reasons why it made this decision, it seems pretty obvious that Apple wanted to avoid further fines from the Brazilian regulator amid the iPhone charger controversies.

Google Messages has started letting some users react with any emoji - The Verge

/

We may soon get options besides thumbs up, heart eyes, laughing, shock, crying, and anger.

Two screenshots, one showing the extra emoji button in the reactions pop-up, and the other showing the emoji picker that appears when you tap that button.
And just like that, Messages are now way more fun.

Google has started letting some users of its Messages app react to text messages with any emoji, instead of limiting them to the standard set of seven that have been available in the app for a while now (via 9to5Google). The feature’s similar to what other messaging platforms like Slack, WhatsApp, and paid versions of Telegram have — pressing and holding on a message gives you the standard emoji reactions, but you can then access the picker to react with whatever you want.

The expanded emoji reactions appear to be a limited test at this point — 9to5Google says it’s heard two reports of it being rolled out, and while one person on The Verge’s staff has access to it, two other people who checked do not. Google didn’t immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment on the feature.

As with any features that are added to messaging services, the extra reactions can be a bit messy depending on who you’re texting, and what communications standards their phone supports. They seem to work fine if both parties are using RCS, the SMS replacement that Google’s been pushing for. My phone doesn’t have access to the extended picker yet, but my colleague’s reactions showed up correctly when I was using Google’s Messages app.

I can’t react with this emoji, but I was able to see when someone reacted to my message with it.

Other configurations can get messy, though. On the same phone, which obviously supports RCS, Samsung’s Messages app shows the reaction as a separate text message, saying “đŸ˜± to ‘Can you react to this message?’” The same’s true when my colleague reacts to a text from an iPhone user, as those are SMS only (much to Google’s chagrin).

So we’re back to this...

That the reactions don’t translate to iPhones isn’t a surprise. For one, Apple’s Tapback system only lets you use a specific set of symbols, so it’s unlikely the company’s Messages app has the ability to add an arbitrary emoji to a message. Even if it did, who knows if it would; after years of Apple users’ reactions showing up as separate text messages for Android users, it appeared as if the two companies had worked out a solution, with iMessage’s and Google Message’s reactions translating between the two platforms. And yet, when I tested it today with the standard reactions, I was back to the same old system of getting separate “[emoji] to [message]” texts instead of beautifully-displayed reactions when messaging between an Android phone and iPhone.

Regardless of whatever Apple and Google have going on, I am happy to see Google bringing this feature to its texting platform, even if it’s really only elegant when you’re doing RCS chats. It’s a feature I’ve always wanted everywhere, and it seems like Google’s working on making that the case, at least for the people using its app.
